Emerge Circle– Flower Stems quilt

I was the lead quilter for July for the Emerge Circle of do.good Stitches.  We make quilts for local and global charities.  I am the lead quilter once a year.  The other months I make blocks for the lead quilter.

Flower Stems

The quilt is made of (12) 18″ square blocks and (12) 12″ square improv blocks.  We have 12 members in Emerge Circle, including myself, so everyone made (1) 18″ square block and (1) 12″ square block.  The color palette was: Salmon, Dark Gray, Light Green, White, Light Blue, Peach and Yellow.  I put the blocks together randomly.

You can view the instructions here: FLower Stems pattern July 2018.

The layout is very simple with Row 1 with (4) 18″ square blocks, Row 2 with (6) 12″ square blocks and so on:

Flower Stems Layout July 2018I used Quilter’s Dream batting, 100% deluxe cotton.  The quilt finished at 78″ by 72″.   I used the walking foot on my Bernina to quilt it.

Making this quilt with the Emerge Circle of do.good stitches was so much fun. I liked seeing what each member created. They have great taste. The fabric choices were perfect. I blogged about the inspiration in this post.

I hand quilted it. I used quarter circles, beginning at each corner. I like the texture and interest it gives to the linear strips. I added a small section of yellow fabric in the binding (Christa Watson’s Modern Marks) to represent the sun.

I’m donating the quilt to The Doorways. They provide lodging and support for patients and their loved ones who need to be near the hospital. They say the place feels like home. I hope this handmade quilt will give them the feeling of home.  Every home needs a quilt.

A Cloud Eclipse and Simple Improv Tutorial

For October, I am the lead Quilter for the Emerge Circle of do.good Stitches. I created the design for our group to make (see below). I’m posting the instructions for my fellow do-gooders on my blog, but I thought WLS followers might enjoy seeing how to simple improv.

COLOR PALETTE

I used this photo of the eclipse as inspiration for the color palette:

The light on the clouds is awesome.

I uploaded the photo into Play Crafts palette maker:

These are the colors: Navy (royal is okay too), Black, Light and Medium Grays and Cream/White

USE SOLIDS OR PRINTS OR A MIX

YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE ALL THE COLORS IN THE BLOCKS

For example, you can use cream, black and light gray together. If you don’t have navy, that’s okay with me.

Please avoid prints with other colors in them.

Please make TWO BLOCKS.

SIZE: 12.5″ UNFINISHED

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

Cut strips 13″ length  by 2.5″ to 5″ (or thereabouts) width

Use scissors or a rotary cutter.

Don’t use a ruler.

I learned this technique at the Slow Stitching Retreat in Maine this summer. Heather Jones focused on color theory and we used all solids, but the idea works with prints too! When I’m ready, I’ll write a post about the class and my experience at the Retreat.

ASSEMBLY

In any order, sew the strips together along the 13″ side.

Press seams open or to the darker fabric.

Square up to 12.5″

Great Job!
